When things go wrong it helps to have a vet who can come to you to help you come up with a plan. Emergency care includes: wounds, colic, and sudden illnesses.
When your animal is having its annual vaccinations it makes good sense to have an overall physical examination. Early detection of problems can lead to much better treatment plans. Take this time to discuss any concerns you may have and together we can come up with a plan to keep your animal on a healthy pathway.
A horse is a big investment- not only in terms of money but emotionally should things go wrong. It is strongly recommended when buying a horse, to have it checked by a veterinarian. We follow the EVA pre-purchase guidelines to provide you with a detailed report. We look at the horse from teeth to tail, on the ground, on the lunge, and under saddle (as needed).
Southern Cross Equine has a wide array of advanced diagnostic equipment. For investigation of injured tendons and ligaments as well as any other soft tissue structures we use ultrasound. Ultrasound is great, as it is a safe and minimally invasive way to get to a diagnosis. Our ultrasound is fully portable.
Our x-ray is totally portable which means we can take x-rays in the field. These images can then be emailed to you or to a referring veterinarian.
Equine dentistry can make a huge difference to your horse's happiness and health. We endeavour to make each dental as stress free as possible. We utilise both motorised and hand-powered tools to maintain dental care of horses of all ages.
Horses should be microchipped for security reasons. Hendra vaccinations require horses to be microchipped as does registering your horse for EA.
Microchipping your dog or cat is essential to reunite you with your pet if they become lost.
Horses: Annual vaccinations for tetanus and strangles are important. Pregnant mares require additional vaccination.
Dogs: Dogs require three puppy vaccinations and then a yearly booster to keep them covered. It's a good idea to discuss with your vet what vaccinations your dog is likely to need. For example if your dog is going to a boarding kennel they may have special requirements around vaccination.
Cats: Cats need three kitten vaccinations and then a yearly booster. Some cats, particularly if they live outdoors or have contact with other cats, should have special vaccinations. It's a good idea to discuss with your vet what vaccinations your cat is likely to need.
We all endeavour to give our animals the best lives possible and it is also important to give them a good death. I endeavour to make this difficult time as peaceful as possible allowing people a chance to say goodbye properly.
